New international regulations for the treatment of ships ballast water took effect on September 8, 2017, enforced by the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), a division of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).   The new regulations require that all ships traveling in international waters have an effective treatment method on board to purify the ballast water they carry in their vessel.
