The
new Ballast Water Treatment Convention has been in full force since September
of 2017, and if you are looking for suppliers to help you with compliant treatment systems you need to contact the LightSources group. New requirements are being enforced by the
Marine Enforcement Protection Committee (MEPC), a division of the International
Maritime Organization (IMO). This is
part of a global effort by the United Nations to protect the world’s oceans and
sustainability.
Hazards of Ballast Water in Ships
When
ships use ballast water for balance during international trips, they will pick
up water in one region after unloading cargo to aid in balance while sailing
through the water. When landing in another
port in a different country, the ballast water is released into a foreign
environment and wreaks havoc on the marine life and ecosystem. In some cases, contaminated ballast water has
wiped out entire fishing communities with invasive foreign species like
poisonous jellyfish or multiplying mussels taking over the new
environment. These invasive species
typically have natural predators in their home environment, but when deposited
into new environments without predators they multiply and take over.
UV Treatment of Ballast Water Proven
Safe and Effective
Ultraviolet
(UV) technology is proven to be safe and extremely effective in eradiating allharmful contaminants in the ballast water of ships and is
used worldwide in ballast water treatment systems. UV technology meets the new requirements
enforced by the MEPC and meets all US Coast Guard regulations. UV germicidal lamps provide safe and
effective methods for treating water, without the use of chemicals which can
pose a health hazard, corrode equipment and may still require dichlorination to
protect against harmful effects of the chlorine.
LightSources
is a leader in specialty UV germicidal lamps, used in sterilization and
purification systems of air and water in a multitude of applications worldwide. With powerful germ-killing technology, UV
radiation emitted at 254 nanometer (nm), is proven to destroy harmful bacteria,
viruses and marine life in ballast water treatment systems.
Our
experienced engineers understand the technology behind the systems, and will
custom design a UV germicidal application just for your system, meeting all
regulations for effective ballast water treatment.
LightSources and its affiliated
companies – LCD Lighting, Voltarc, LightTech, and Cerlux represent the
leading high-tech designers and manufacturers in the lamp industry
today. Our products are used world-wide in a multitude of
applications and industries such as our UV ballast water treatment systems,
meeting all US Coast Guard requirements.
