UV Light Keeps Kitchens and Restaurants Cleaner

Restaurants have been finding innovative ways to keep patrons safe from germs while keeping their doors open. Ultraviolet (UV) light and the powerful germicidal benefits of UVC energy is nothing new, although restaurant owners are taking notice of the many ways this germicidal technology can help their business. UVC lamps are part of many systems worldwide such as air purification systems, water disinfection systems and surface sterilization systems.

Where UVC Lamps Help Restaurants

High intensity UVC lamps have proven efficacy in eliminating a wide range of harmful pathogens including viruses, bacteria, mildew, and mold. This germicidal technology can be harnessed in various systems to protect food directly in addition to protecting surfaces, water, and the air in enclosed spaces. Here are some of the most popular areas of installing UV sterilization lamps for restaurants and food service applications:

Food irradiation - The short wave electromagnetic energy has powerful sterilization effects, keeping food safe with UV germicidal irradiation. UV lamps can help to keep food fresher, longer, and prevent early spoilage as well as preventing many harmful germs like E. Coli and Salmonella.

Kitchen hood exhaust systems – UV energy has the ability to prevent the buildup of grease in commercial kitchen hoods. This mitigates fire risk, reduces equipment maintenance, and prevents foul odors that can occur from grease buildup.

Keep walk-in freezers clean – UV lamps prevent mold and mildew from forming in cool, damp places like walk-in freezers which is critically important to storing fresh food and meeting health code regulations.

Air sterilization in eating areas – sterilizing the air that circulates through a restaurant’s HVAC system helps to keep patrons safer with cleaner, purified air. UV lamps in HVAC systems keep the air cleaner by eliminating airborne pathogens and removing foul odors from the air.

Hospitals and Patients Benefit from UVC Robots

post 91
UVC Robots are becoming more popular as a powerful germ killing machine that provides important health benefits to many industries.  The healthcare industry in particular is realizing great benefits by incorporating UV robots as part of the sterilization process in hospitals.  UV robots equipped with high-quality UVC germicidal lamps are programmed to disinfect patient rooms in between patients to thoroughly sterilize and kill any lingering viruses and bacteria.
Hospitals that incorporate UV light technology to sterilize rooms in addition to their regular cleaning routines will provide many benefits to patients, staff and to the hospital. Hospital acquired infections are more common than many people realize with about 1 in 25 people contracting an infection due to a hospital stay.  This can be devastating for the patient and lead to longer hospital stays.
UVC radiation is proven to effectively kill almost all forms of harmful pathogens including superbugs like Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) or vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE).  UVC robots are even shown to effectively kill these resistant superbugs when in the line of sight and also when the virus is hiding behind objects at a rate of 99.9%.
The success of UVC robots depends entirely on the quality of the UVC sterilization lamps on the unit.  Using high quality UVC lamps is key to realizing maximum benefit and germ killing effectiveness.

Phototherapy is also referred to as light therapy and is proven to be successful treating many medical conditions. Ultraviolet (UV) lamps are prescribed to patients with various ailments including many skin conditions such as acne, eczema, jaundice, vitiligo and psoriasis. Light therapy is also used to treat mood disorders such as sleep disorders, seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and depression.

It is important to receive phototherapy under the care of a physician and to use the right type of phototherapy lamp.  Not all lamps are made the same and the right type of UV emission is necessary to provide the proper treatment for health conditions. Using the wrong type of lamp could even make symptoms worse.  The right type of phototherapy lamp used under the care of a physician is proven to provide relief to many patients suffering from these many conditions.

UVA and UVB Phototherapy Lamps Treat Psoriasis

Ultraviolet radiation is measured by wavelengths and divided into three categories of UVA, UVB and UVC light.  Ultraviolet emissions in the UVB range is used to treat psoriasis and is helpful in slowing down cell production of new skin, which allows skin cells to heal. UVA light therapy may also be helpful although must be prescribed with a medication called psoralen which helps the skin to absorb the UVA emissions.  This treatment is referred to as PUVA treatment for psoriasis. Psoriasis patients may expect to see relief from phototherapy in as little as a few weeks to a few months.

Do UV Germicidal Lamps Really Work?

custom-light-bulbs

An ultraviolet (UV) germicidal lamp produces ultraviolet radiation with electricity. UV radiation is proven to eliminate harmful germs, bacteria, viruses and microorganisms within seconds of exposure. UV radiation emitted at 254 nm is the most effective wavelength which instantly penetrates the DNA of these harmful cells and renders them unable to replicate. Viruses and germs that cannot multiplied to infectious levels are considered dead and harmless.

Low-pressure Mercury discharge lamps are similar in construction to fluorescent lamps although the inner lamp wall does not have a phosphor coating which allows the right amount of UV radiation to filter through.  Low-pressure Mercury germicidal lamps convert up to 40% of electricity into UV radiation.

The lamp body of a UV germicidal lamp is made with soft glass, quartz or pure fused quartz. Lamp bodies constructed with pure fused quartz of 185 nm as well as 254 nm emissions with VH (very high) glass.  UV germicidal lamps that transmit 185 nm of UV radiation produce ozone which is a known oxidizer and sanitizer. Ozone effectively eliminates foul odors in the air and can be transmitted through the air to reach places direct UV exposure cannot reach.

UV lamps manufactured with quartz and titanium block out 185 nm emissions to transmit 254 nm of UVC radiation only. UVC lamps engineered with L glass is soft glass which transmits 254 nm UV radiation for germicidal effectiveness.  Electrodes located at each lamp and connect an external current source to the Mercury gas discharge device.

The germicidal lamp body is filled with either pure argon gas or a mixture of rare gasses including neon and argon. A small amount of mercury produces the necessary UVC radiation.  UV germicidal lamps really do work although it is best to speak with a reputable UV lamp manufacturer to be sure that you achieve the right emissions of UV radiation for your application.

LightSources has constructed patented UVC germicidal lamps which outlast and outperform comparable products with energy efficiency and safety features included.  You can find our germicidal lamps in air purification systems and water sterilization applications worldwide.

The LightSources group is a leading global supplier of proven UV germicidal layouts and high-tech lighting solutions.  We provide a wide selection of UVC germicidal lamp products proven in applications worldwide. Contact us to learn more and for custom designed UV lamp solutions to fit your needs.

What is CRI and How It Can Benefit You?

CRI is a term used in the lighting industry and stands for Color Rendering Index, which is a rating scale used to measure the effectiveness of a light source to render colors when compared to natural daylight.  Natural Daylight has a CRI of 100, which is the highest score available.  A lower CRI of 50 or less indicates that the source of light is not conducive to rendering colors very well.  In fluorescent lighting, a CRI rating of 80 to 95 is an excellent rating of color rendering ability.
Industry Uses of Excellent CRI
Using the right lighting in your business can render great rewards, in terms displaying your products in a better and more appealing light.  Knowing the CRI of your light source will benefit your business, and your customer satisfaction.
If you own a jewelry store, you would want your jewels, diamonds, gold and silver displayed with lighting that provides a high quality of color rendering, and registers high on the CRI scale.  A high-quality light with an elevated CRI rating will really bounce light off of your diamonds and allow the flashy colors to show through, pleasing your customers and enticing a purchase.
A favorable CRI index rating is also quite desirable in the clothing industry, improving the appearance of displays allowing vibrant colors to show through.   The restaurant and food industries also benefit from a high CRI index, as showcasing healthy red meats or desirable desserts influences a consumer’s choice when ordering their meal.
As you can see, the effectiveness of your lighting plays a big role in the success of your business.
LCD Lighting Provides Enhanced CRI Index Lighting

Phototherapy Promotes Healing for Skin Disorders

Light Therapy, also known as Phototherapy, is recognized world-wide for providing many health benefits for a wide variety of medical conditions.  Phototherapy is most often provided in fluorescent light, emitted at specific wavelengths to treat specific conditions.
Phototherapy for Skin Conditions
One of the most common conditions treated with phototherapy is jaundice in newborn babies.  Babies are born with a certain degree of jaundice, which occurs when toxins in the body are not broken down completely by the liver.  This causes a yellowing of the whites of the eyes and the skin, as toxins build up in the body.  Bilirubin is a yellow compound that is usually broken down by the liver, but when jaundice occurs and babies need help, shortwave UV light is used to breakdown the bilirubin.
These lights are called “bili lights”, and are highly effective when exposed to bare skin. Babies are placed under UV lights with nothing but a diaper for maximum exposure.  Specific lighting can be sent home with parents with instructions to use for a specified period of time.
Psoriasis and Skin Disorders Treated with Phototherapy
Light therapy is proven effective with healing many skin disorders and especially for people suffering from psoriasis, acne and eczema.   Exposure to UV light from UVA and UVB lamps is proven to decelerate the growth of skin cells and aid healing to those suffering with psoriasis.  UV light is also used to treat eczema which is an inflammatory condition caused from an overactive immune system.  Exposure to fluorescent lamps suppress the immune system and reduce inflamed, swollen and itchy skin.
Acne is a result of bacteria in the skin causing inflammation in the form of a pimple when the immune system attacks the bacteria.  Red and blue light therapy in wavelengths of 600 – 700 nanometer (nm) is combined to treat acne with successful results.  Red Light therapy is proven to sooth inflammation and stimulate cell growth to promote healing and regeneration.  Blue light at 415 nm is most effective at killing bacteria, preventing breakouts from acne.
For the best UV light phototherapy treatment for specific conditions, contact the LightSources group to speak with a knowledgeable engineer on the best treatment for you.

LCDL manufactures hot cathode fluorescent lamps (HCFL) and cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL) for a wide variety of commercial and industrial processes.  HCFL lamps contain a filament and can be found in lighting applications such as copy machines, scanners and vision systems. The HCFL product line offered by LCDL includes tubular lamp products with various diameters and lengths.  The smallest size of these high performing HCFL lamps begin with T2, where T represents the shape of the lamp as tubular and the number 2 represents an eighth of an inch, therefore a T8 lamp is the same as 8/8 or exactly 1 inch in diameter.   The largest size produced by LCDL is a T12 which equates to a 1 ½ “diameter.   Our superior HCFL lamps are also used in graphic arts, signs and medical devices.
Cold-Cathode Fluorescent Lamps
LCDL’s miniature CCFL lamps are typically used in a variety of neon signs in bendable shapes, and use an electrode rather than a filament.    Mini fluorescent lamps are often used as accent lighting or back lighting in avionic displays, military applications, computers, vehicles and the NASA space shuttle.
Both the HCFL and CCFL lamps use mercury vapor that enhances the phosphor coating promoting extraordinary lighting for a pleasing visible light.  LightSources and LCDL have a wide selection of standard miniature lamps or we will customize a solution specific to our customer’s specifications.

Types of Glass
There are basically four types of glass that produce just about every type of lamp including general light bulbs, fluorescent lamps in signs and industrial applications, UV germicidal lamps treating air, water and surfaces, lamps used to treat skin conditions in the dermatology field, and UV lamps for tanning purposes.  The uses for UV and fluorescent lighting are endless, benefiting commercial and industrial applications worldwide.
  • Open Glass – open glass designs have approximately 35% transmission, allowing for a balanced ratio of UVA and UVB waves to pass through the lamp glass.  Open glass lamps are often used in the tanning industry in North America.
  • Closed Glass – closed glass lamp designs are often used in tanning in Europe, which emit more UVA energy while limiting UVB energy.
  • Germicidal Soft Glass – Germicidal soft glass allows for the highest amount of UV transmission with 91%, including maximum UVC exposure which is highly effective in sterilizing water and air.  UVC germicidal lamps are used worldwide to eradicate bacteria, virus and harmful pathogens in countless applications.
  • FS Glass – FS glass offers a combination of open and closed glass, using a very narrow phosphor band resulting in pure UVB exposure, effective in dermatological applications benefiting people with various skin conditions.
LightSources and LightTech have vast knowledge in ultraviolet radiation, and in providing the most effective wavelength in nanometers (nm) for required applications.  All glass types are available in T4, T5, T6, & T8 dimensions, with cut or collared glass options.
