What is Color Rendering Index (CRI)?

Color Rendering index (CRI) is a rating scale to assign the effectiveness of a light source in rendering colors, compared with natural daylight.  A CRI of 100 is equal to natural daylight referring to the highest ability of color rendering which is by the sun itself.  On the contrary, a low CRI of 50 or less means that the light source does not render colors very well.  An acceptable CRI in fluorescent lighting is 80 to 95, which equates to an excellent color rendering ability.
Where is CRI Important in Industry?
Knowing the CRI of your lighting has great benefits and will provide competitive advantages in certain industrial applications.  For example, in the jewelry store you want your lighting to reflect the full spectrum of lighting when exposed to diamonds and jewels, showcasing your items and making them more appealing and desirable.
A high CRI index used in clothing displays makes a big difference in the appearance of clothing, casting an appealing glow in the right displays to reveal vibrant color schemes.  Food displays in restaurants, showcasing primed aged meats or delectable desserts can make the difference in a consumer’s decision to appease their appetite.  Whatever your lighting application, do not underestimate the power of pleasing, high quality lighting with a high color rendering index.
LCD Lighting, a valued partner company to The LightSources Group, has developed proprietary color rendering index technology with more rare-earth tri-phosphors revealing natural true colors.  With advanced technology, LightSources and LCD Lighting can develop custom colors for specific requirements in various applications.
Fluorescent Lamp Color Specification
With more than 100 various shades of white, it is important to choose the right color coordinates for your fluorescent lighting application.  Even the slightest variation will make a difference in many different environments.  The most effective method of defining the color is with color coordinates.
We can choose an existing phosphor blend with exact color coordinates for your application, or we can develop a unique phosphor blend just for your specific needs.
LightSources and its affiliated companies – LCD Lighting, Voltarc, LightTech, and Cerlux represent the leading high-tech designers and manufacturers in the lamp industry today. New Ballast Water Treatment Convention

With the new Ballast Water Treatment Convention regulations taking effect September 8, 2017, updated regulatory requirements are quickly nearing.   Ballast water treatment companies are scrambling to comply with proper treatment methods aboard their ships.
The LightSources Group is recognized as a leader in the industry of ultraviolet (UV) lighting applications including UV germicidal purposes.  UV radiation is a safe and effective method for eradicating bacteria, viruses, and harmful pathogens in air and water.
LightSources and our global partners recognize the importance of transporting water clear from disease throughout our international waters, and with locations on three continents we are positioned to be a valuable key supplier to the industry of ballast water treatment systems.
Benefits of UV Ballast Water Treatment Systems
No harmful chemical use is a huge benefit to UV water purification systems.   With long lasting high performing UV germicidal bulbs, there is very minimal maintenance required, and no need to store harmful chemicals or no chance of harmful residue remaining in the water.  With some chemical applications, a second treatment is necessary to remove any harmful residue.
UV radiation quickly and effectively removes contaminants from water, even harmful marine organisms in ocean water, with no harmful side effects.
Importance of Ballast Water Treatment
Ships carry ballast water for balance and safety, taking on ballast water when unloading cargo in one region, and releasing it when loading in another.  This transfer of ocean water from one region to another has been recognized as one of the greatest threats to the world’s oceans today.
When ships release ballast water into a new region, it may often contain foreign invaders that have no natural predator in a new environment, therefore they thrive and multiply.  Once the foreign organisms take root in their new home, they can take over quickly with nothing to stop them.   This has been the case in several shipping ports, all but eliminating once thriving fishing industries.  These invaders from the sea can be poisonous algae, mussels, jellyfish and even bacteria naked to the human eye.
UV radiation effectively cleans the water prior to releasing into new environments, thus preserving the natural environment with no threat of invasive species from a foreign land.   UV treatment systems for ballast water are safe, effective, and are compliant with US Coast Guard regulations.
LightSources is a world leading UV lighting and germicidal application supplier, providing proven solutions with high performing, long lasting lamps.  Our engineers have vast knowledge of UV germicidal lamps, and how to harness the most effective UV radiation for sterilization and purification applications.
LightSources and our affiliated companies comprise the leading high-tech designers and manufacturers in the lamp industry today.  We offer standard lamps and components as well as customized products providing high-quality solutions to meet our partner’s unique needs.  Contact us today to speak to one of our expert engineers for assistance with planning and designing your approved system using the most effective ballast water treatment technologies.
