Why LightSources Supports SOS Children’s Villages in Europe

SOS Kinderdorf Support logo

Today’s children will create the future of the world.  So now more than ever it is important to support a commitment to true social change that will benefit children worldwide.  That is why LightSources supports the mission of SOS Children’s Villages in Europe.

SOS Children’s Villages is an international federation with 117 individual associations that support the objectives, statutes, standards of child care and rigorous financial and administrative practices of the organization.  It was founded in 1949 in Imst, Austria, with an original goal to assist children who had lost homes, security and families as a result of World War II.  It has since expanded to help children all over the world.

The SOS Children’s Village innovative concept in children’s welfare organizations is to provide a family approach to the long-term care of abandoned children or those without parents.  Each child receives the care of a parent, typically a mother, who provides a close relationship with every child in her care by providing love, security and stability.  She lives with the children entrusted to her care, leads the household and nurtures the development of each child while respecting their religion, culture and family background.  The children live together, natural brothers and sisters always staying together in the same SOS family, and develop emotional ties that last a lifetime.

A great need of late in Europe has been the civil war in Syria and the tremendous number of children who have lost their families not to mention countless refugees of all ages.  SOS Children’s Villages in both Syria and Serbia have stepped up their efforts with two mobile teams that help refugees in numerous ways to stay healthy both physically and mentally and to continue their journey to safe havens within other European countries.

At LightSources we are proud to support SOS Children’s Village in Europe and encourage everyone to help in any way they can.

LightSources and its affiliated companies – LCD Lighting, Voltarc, LightTech, and Cerlux represent the leading high-tech designers and manufacturers in the lamp industry today.  Our products are used world-wide in a variety of applications and industries such as our UV light air purification systems that offer a safe solution for sterilization, odor control, and the removal of toxic chemicals.

The LightSources Group Supports Susan G. Komen for the Cure®

The LightSources group is committed to making the world a better place and social involvement is a fundamental part of our corporate culture.  With that goal in mind we pro-actively develop greener technologies and implement sustainable business practices as well as dedicate time and resources to raising money and awareness for social causes.

One of the charities LightSources is proud to support is Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the global leader in the fight against breast cancer serving over 60 countries worldwide. Komen, along with their corporate sponsors, raise money in a host of ways.  From direct giving, employee engagement and volunteerism as well as many different fundraising events a movement has been created to fight this devastating disease.

Whether you are a golfer, a bowler, a chef or a runner, there is a Komen event you can participate in. Join others in raising funds to fight this battle, celebrate survivorship and honor those that have lost their lives to breast cancer.   At least 80 cents of every dollar raised is spent on mission programs, including 20-25 cents on research.

In the U.S., breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in woman aged 20-59.  But with the help of science, education, and support to those facing the disease, the morality rate has decreased by 37% from 1990 to 2013.  Komen has been a big part of this – since 1982 they have funded more than $889 million in research and $1.95 billion in medical care, education and support – helping millions to become breast cancer survivors.

At LightSources we know that by supporting Komen, we are helping our mothers, sisters, grandmothers, friends – and every woman who has ever touched our lives.

LightSources U.S. Team is Active Participant in Relay for Life

Relay for Life logo

Led by Sue Rocchio, the U.S. based LightSources associates in Orange, Connecticut created a women’s team to participate in The American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.  The event is a 24-hour relay that helps increase awareness and raise funds to combat breast cancer.

According to Sue, “The relays have always been a special experience for our teams.  Many of us have come in touch with cancer ourselves.  Rain or shine, different groups from around the community participated in this wonderful event to support a common cause.”

LightSources associates join more than 4 million people in over 20 different countries by participating in the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life.  And the event is growing every year and becoming a global movement.  The success of the event helps save lives by raising money and increasing visibility on the efforts to defeat cancer.  But those that participate also get to celebrate the lives of people that have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.

The Relay For Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those that face cancer will never be alone, and that one day cancer will be eliminated. Individuals and groups that have participated have reported it is truly a life changing event.

We at LightSources and our affiliated companies hope that many individuals will be inspired by our participation to join the efforts in their communities to support the American Cancer Society and the Relay For Life.

LightSources Supports St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has a mission: finding cures for pediatric cancers and other catastrophic childhood diseases and saving children.  Founded in 1962 by entertainer Danny Thomas, St. Jude has been at the forefront of research that has resulted in pioneering treatments that have helped push the overall survival rates for childhood cancer from less than 20 percent when the hospital opened to 80 percent today.  In particular, the survival rate for the most common form of childhood cancer has risen from 4 percent to 94 percent.

As the first and only pediatric cancer center to be awarded by the National Cancer Institute the designation of a Comprehensive Cancer Center, St. Jude is also making progress against other pediatric catastrophic diseases such as genetic diseases, sickle cell disease, and blood and bone disorders.

The cost of providing state-of-the art treatments and outstanding care is high.  Yet no child is denied treatment at St. Jude because of a family’s inability to pay.  That is the promise of St. Jude to the families it serves and over the years children from all 50 states and around the world have come to St. Jude for treatment.   One of the ways that St. Jude accomplishes its mission is to make sure that funding is used primarily for research and treatments.  Over the past five years 81 cents of every dollar received has supported these objectives.

For over 20 years LightSources owner Christian Sauska has been a valued friend of the St. Jude mission.  The daily operating cost for St. Jude is $1.5 million and contributions from generous individuals such as Mr. Sauska are the primary source of funding for these costs.  Additionally, LightSources encourages all of its partners and associates to also contribute to the efforts of St. Jude so that one day pediatric cancer might be eliminated.

LightSources, and our strategic European partner, LightTech represent the leading high-tech designers and manufacturers in the lamp industry today.  Our products are used world-wide in a multitude of applications and industries such as our UV air purification systems that offer a safe solution for sterilization, odor control, and the removal of toxic chemicals.

LightSources Wide-Ranging Green Business Practices Commitment

While LightSources is fully engaged in social involvement and programs, it also takes very seriously the company-wide objective of proactively developing environmentally-friendly technologies and implementing green business practices across a broad range of our products and processes.  By doing so we not only support the lives of individuals and groups in need but also our planet which we all share.

The focus of LightSources commitment is in three main areas: 1) continuous improvement of processes; 2) energy efficient products and; 3) recycling technologies.  Each of these areas are constantly being evaluated to make sure that not only are we meeting our current objectives as well as government mandates for green practices, but we are also looking ahead to new practices and technologies that will further enhance an eco-friendly agenda that we fully support.

An illustration of continuous improvement measures includes a strong emphasis on training for employees about environmental issues and proper best practices within the industry.  And along with training the LightSources group has implemented a process that uses measured mercury pellets for controlled mercury dosage and also lead-free phosphors.

Energy efficient products are best accomplished by long lamp life.  LightSource products, from the LongLife TM UV germicidal lamp to the TriLight Max lighting lamps to our array of tanning lamps have long lives which mean fewer replacements thus reducing maintenance and replacement costs and fewer lamp recycling processes. All of these led to protection of our precious natural resources.

Finally, recycling is accomplished at our LightTech facility with our own recycling equipment which allows us to meet the WEEE (Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive for recycled materials.  This also greatly assists LightSources to prevent and reduce waste of electrical equipment during the production process. Any materials we cannot recycle are sent to Electro Coord where they are recycled.
