Phototherapy Treats Seasonal Depression

Seasonal depression often occurs during the fall and winter months for people who live in the Northern Hemisphere, when daylight hours begin to diminish. If you experience seasonal depression, also referred to as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), you should talk to your physician about therapies including light therapy. Light therapy is also called phototherapy and is successful in treating anywhere from 50% to 80% of patients when administered properly.

If you experience any of the following symptoms of seasonal depression, consult with your physician about light therapy for depression. Symptoms of seasonal depression include:
  • Social withdrawal
  • Craving foods which are high in carbohydrates
  • Loss of interest in normal activities
  • Excessive fatigue
  • Weight gain
Phototherapy is recognized as effective therapy SAD, making a considerable improvement in the mood of at least 50% of patients undergoing treatment. When light therapy is administered to an individual’s specific wake and sleep cycle, the percentage of successful treatment increases to as much as 80%. Light therapy usually consists of 30 minutes of exposure from a white fluorescent light each morning. Most patients see a remarkable improvement within as little as one week of treatment.

Effective Ballast Water Treatment Methods

With the most recent regulations for the Ballast Water Treatment Convention taking effect last fall of 2017, all ships are required to have an approved ballast water treatment system on board their vessel. When ships use ballast water while traveling through international waters, they take on ocean water in one port and release it in another. This transfer of ballast water is viewed as one of the largest threats to our planet’s oceans.

When ships release water from one port into a foreign port, aquamarine microorganisms including dangerous bacteria, viruses and foreign life forms often invade the new port with catastrophic results. Invading species are free to take hold in new waters without their natural predators and will often replicate uncontrollably shutting down fishing ports and devastating entire towns. Once thriving fishing town are turned into ghost towns leaving the waters contaminated and the human population without a livelihood.

The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) is a subsidiary of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and enforces the new Ballast Water Treatment Convention (BWTC) which sets the standards for how ships treat their ballast water. All ballast water treatment systems must have an approved treatment system on board that meets U.S. Coast Guard approval.

UVC Germicidal Lamps for U.S. Coast Guard Approved Treatment Systems

UVC germicidal lamps provide powerful water sterilization which meets U.S. Coast Guard Approval for the new Ballast Water Treatment Convention. Ultraviolet, specifically UVC, radiation is proven to quickly and effectively eradicate all viruses and bacteria in water sterilization applications. UVC germicidal lamps are used worldwide to disinfect water, surfaces and air in sterilization systems. UVC radiation emitted at 254 nm is most effective at eradicating all harmful contaminants immediately upon exposure, for fast sterilization in mere seconds.

LightSources is a leading global supplier of high performance UVC germicidal lamps which meet all sterilization requirements with long lasting effectiveness. We offer a wide selection of standard lamps with custom designed solutions available in any shape, size or UVC output. We understand the technology behind the UVC radiation, offering the most effective solution for your application.

UVC Germicidal Lamps for Effective Sterilization

UVC germicidal lamps deliver effective sterilization and purification properties for water, surface and air purification systems worldwide. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation within the wavelength of UVC waves emit powerful disinfectant properties, instantly killing bacteria, viruses and harmful contaminants within seconds upon contact. UVC lamps are used in many applications which require sterilization of water in municipalities, sewage and drinking water systems, food processing, air purification and odor control and water reclamation applications.

LightSources Offers Wide Selection of UVC Germicidal Lamps

LightSources is the leading authority on UVC germicidal lamps with a wide selection of standard lamps and custom options available.

Low Pressure Mercury Lamps – low pressure germicidal lamps are available in either standard and high-output quartz lamps, soft or compact glass lamps, compact GU quartz lamps and custom engineered UVC lamps. Standard lamps provide maximum sterilization effects at 254 nm, with 40% conversion of energy into powerful UVC radiation. Softglass lamps convert up to 30% energy to reach ozone producing 180 nm which effectively eradicates odors.

Low Pressure Amalgam Lamps – Amalgam technology provides the same effective sterilization with more consistent output in temperature changes with custom designed amalgam lamps available for higher temperature processes.

Medium Pressure Ultraviolet Lamps (MPUV) - MPUV lamps are ideal in water and air sterilization processes providing powerful disinfection. LightSources offers a wide selection of MPUV germicidal lamps ranging from 100 wpi to 700 wpi with unique, custom designed phosphor blends designed specifically for your application.

Phototherapy Lamps Provide Healing Benefits

Light therapy is also referred to as phototherapy, as ultraviolet (UV) technology provides healing benefits to many medical ailments. UV light is broken down into wavelengths and measured as nanometers (nm). Each wavelength and nanometer of the UV radiation spectrum provides various properties and benefits, with UVA, UVB and UVC light prescribed for various medical treatments. Light therapy should be conducted only under the care of a physician with the proper prescription for the right type of UV exposure. Work with a reliable phototherapy lamp manufacturer to be sure that your light therapy lamp meets all prescribed specifications.

Phototherapy Lamps Treat Many Health Conditions

Phototherapy lamps successfully treat many medical conditions including skin conditions such as eczema, acne and psoriasis. Light therapy lamps help to slow down the growth of skin cells which promotes healing of these conditions. UV phototherapy lamps relieve red, itchy skin and treat acne by killing bacteria instantly with UVC germicidal effectiveness

Light therapy is also used to treat babies born with jaundice with lamps called Bili-lights. These lamps break down excessive bilirubin which promotes healthy liver development. Babies lay under the lights in their bed like a sunlamp in a hospital and are sometimes given the lights to take home for home phototherapy.

LightSources Manufactures Light Therapy Lamps

Sterilize the Air with UV Air Purification Systems

Sterilizing the air is easier than ever with ultraviolet (UV) technology which is proven to be highly effective and very cost-efficient. HVAC UV air in-duct purification systems are popular in many commercial and residential buildings to provide clean and healthy air to visitors and residents. Clean and sterile air is critically important in many commercial buildings to prevent the spread of disease and promote a healthy environment.

Clean air is critically important to people with compromised immune systems such as patients in hospitals and nursing homes. People who suffer with respiratory diseases like asthma or pneumonia rely on air purification systems to provide air free from bacteria and disease. UVC germicidal lamps deliver instant and effective sterilization properties, instantly killing airborne bacteria and viruses to provide air free from disease to promote overall health and wellness.

In-Duct UVC Air Sterilization and Purification Systems

Ultraviolet radiation has long been recognized for its germicidal effectiveness, used widely in many sterilization and purification systems. UVC wavelengths specifically are quite effective with UVC germicidal lamps utilized in water, air and surface sterilization systems. Ultraviolet light is broken down by color which is measured in wavelengths, referred to as nanometers (nm). UVC light measured at 254 nm is most effective at killing viruses and bacteria.

Whether utilizing ozone generating or ozone free germicidal lamps, be sure to work with an experienced lamp manufacturer with an understanding of UVC germicidal technology
