Industrial Processes Benefit from UV Air Purification

Many industrial processes such as manufacturing plastics, rubber or any industrial process which releases toxic or chemical byproducts requires an air purification system. Companies are required to provide clean air for employees to breathe and are regulated on how much pollutants and contaminants they are allowed to disburse into the air. UV air purification provides a solution to the industrial businesses, with many benefits in addition to clean air.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation has been used for sterilization of water, surfaces and air for many years, and is becoming more popular in residential settings as well. UV light is proven to be safe and effective at removing harmful contaminants including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the air to improve air quality for overall health and well-being.

UV Air Sterilization is Effective and Cost Efficient

UV air sterilization is proven highly effective is very cost efficient with little to no maintenance required. UVC germicidal lamps instantly eliminate viruses and bacteria from the air within seconds of exposure. UV light is measured in wavelengths, referred to as nanometers (nm), with UVC band of 254nm the most effective to eliminate harmful microorganisms. UV radiation emitted at 185nm is necessary to produce ozone which is used in ozone air purification systems to also remove all odor from the air.

Use of UVC germicidal lamps in air purification systems is a safe and effective method of cleaning the air without the use of chemical byproducts. With no need to purchase, store or dispose of chemicals, UV radiation requires less maintenance, is much safer to use and is better for the environment.

Ballast Water Treatment Convention New Rules

The new requirements for the Ballast Water Treatment Convention (BWTC) took effect last September of 2017, with the main goal of establishing procedures for how ships treat their ballast water. The BWTC is enforced by the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), which is a subsidiary group of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Ballast water in ships has been determined to be one of the greatest threats to the sustainability of our world’s oceans.

When ships travel from one port to another and release ballast water from a completely different region, invasive marine organisms often spread to uncontrollable levels wreaking havoc on the fishing industry and even the health and livelihood of residents living in the area. With new rules for the BWTC, all ships are to have a U.S. Coast Guard approved ballast water treatment system.

Air Purification in HVAC Duct Systems

Incorporating air purification systems in HVAC duct systems provides many health benefits to people by delivering air that is free from airborne viruses and bacteria. Ultraviolet (UV) light is highly effective at sanitizing the air we breathe and can be incorporated into existing or newly renovated HVAC systems. UV air purification is important in many commercial settings and is becoming more popular in many residential installations as well.

UV air purifiers are proven to eliminate viruses, bacteria, mold spores, dust mites, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and many harmful contaminants from the air. Ozone emitting UV light purifiers also eliminate odors in the air removing foul or stale odors to deliver a fresh and clean scent free from harmful contaminants. Many commercial settings such as hospitals and doctor’s offices require clean air for patients that may already have a compromised immune system. Providing a safe and clean environment where patients and visitors can breathe clean air is vitally important to overall health and well being and is especially important in medical facilities or nursing homes where the elderly are more susceptible to illness from germs.

In duct air purification systems are also utilized in industrial settings to clean the air in manufacturing facilities processing products such as plastics and rubber. Phototherapy Helps People with Eczema

Eczema causes itchy patches of dry skin that is bothersome and painful to people suffering from this irritating skin disorder. While there is no known cure for eczema, some treatments exist that can help to lessen the symptoms. Ointments and corticosteroids work for some people, while UV light therapy has been a promising treatment for eczema which offers many benefits to patients.

UV light as a treatment for eczema is often highly effective at improving painful symptoms and controlling future outbreaks. UV light treatment is also called phototherapy, which is delivered in a doctor’s office or under a doctor’s care with a prescription for a specialty lamp designed specifically for eczema treatment. Phototherapy for eczema includes UV lamps which emit wavelengths in the UVA, UVB and narrow band UVB spectrum.

How Does a UV Lamp Work to Treat Eczema?

UV light is emitted in wavelengths which are measure by nanometers (nm) with UVA light in the range of 315nm to 400nm, UVB rays in the range of 280nm to 315nm with narrow band UVB measuring at 310nm. All are proven to successfully treat eczema by suppressing an overactive immune system and reducing inflammation, pain and itching.

The most common type of phototherapy lamp used to treat eczema is the narrow band UVB treatment which mimics rays from the sun and is helpful to clear up symptoms of eczema. A medication called Psoralen is required to be administered with UVA treatments which makes the skin more receptive to absorbing the UVA wavelengths.

How Does a UVC Light Bulb Work?

UVC Light bulbs generate ultraviolet, UV, radiation within the UVC spectrum for the most powerful germicidal effectiveness. UVC lamps eliminate bacteria, viruses, mold spores, fungi and harmful contaminants by penetrating the DNA of their cells. UVC radiation destroys the cells of microorganisms making them unable to reproduce, instantly rendering them harmless.

A specially designed UVC light bulb emits UV radiation at precisely 254 nanometer (nm), which delivers the most germicidal effectiveness. UVC lamps designed to emit energy at 185 nm are used in ozone air purification lamps to effectively eliminate odors from the air including volatile organic compounds (VOCs). UVC light bulbs provide fresh, clean and odor free air for improved health in many residential and commercial settings.

UVC Light Bulb Specifications

UVC light bulbs are typically low pressure, mercury lamps which provide the optimum amount of UV radiation at the right wavelength. When mercury atoms reach a high energy level, low pressure produces a mercury arc with radiates at exactly 254 nm. UVC lamps usually contain Argon gas or a mixture of Argon, Neon and other gases required in certain applications.

UVC light bulbs are manufactured similarly to fluorescent lamps, operating with a comparable discharge device. The body of a UVC lamp is typically made of either:

L Glass – quartz and Titanium which blocks out 185nm
L Glass – soft glass designed to emit 254nm
VH Glass – pure fused quartz that transmits both 185nm and 254nm

UVC lamps do not have the inner phosphor coating which allows for maximum pass through of UV radiation. UVC bulbs are not designated by voltage as incandescent bulbs are, but rather by operating voltage. The lamp ballasts determine and deliver the operating voltage required to break down rare gases.
