Health Benefits of Phototherapy

Phototherapy is also known as Light Therapy, and refers to treating a variety of medical conditions by exposure to wavelengths of light.  The most common type of bulb used in phototherapy is fluorescent light, although there are many variations used for different conditions.

Light Treatment for Skin Conditions

One common condition treated with specialty fluorescent lights is jaundice.  Newborn babies are often born with a degree of jaundice which occurs when the liver cannot yet break down all toxins in the body, causing a yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes.  Exposure to exact wavelengths of blue lights, “Bili” lights, will break down bilirubin and improve jaundice in newborns.  Parents are often sent home with specific lighting to use for certain periods of time.

Patients with skin disorders such as psoriasis, eczema and acne also benefit from phototherapy:

  • Exposure to UVA and UVB lamps can decelerate the growth of skin cells and aid in healing skin for people suffering from psoriasis.
  • UV light is also successful in treating eczema, an inflammation in the skin caused by an overactive immune system.  Fluorescent light exposure suppresses the immune system, reducing symptoms of swollen, itchy skin.
  • Acne occurs when bacteria in the skin is attacked by the immune system, causing an inflammation, or a pimple.  Combined red and blue light therapy is used for treating acne.  Wavelengths of 600nm – 700nm in red light are successful in soothing inflammation and stimulating cell growth for regeneration and healing.  Wavelengths at 415 nm in blue light are effective in killing bacteria thus preventing acne breakouts.

Light Treatment for Mood Disorders

A number of mood disorders are also much improved with light therapy.   One of the most talked about is SAD, also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder.  This is a state of depression that occurs when an individual has less exposure to daylight during fall or winter months, and can get quite serious in a short amount of time.  Exposure to full spectrum lighting that imitates the sun usually improves depression symptoms in as little time as one week.  Other sleep disorders including jet lag also have seen remarkable improvements with phototherapy.

Wound Healing and Diabetes

Wound healing from bed sores, diabetes, and poor circulation can also be treated with exposure to infrared lights.  Diabetic retinopathy, damage to the retina from diabetes, occurs in 80% of all patients that have diabetes for 20 years or longer, and is the leading cause of blindness in people age 20 to 64.   Surprisingly, 90% of all new cases could be reduced with monitoring and proper treatment.

See our website or contact us to speak with leading experts in light therapy to see how we can assist you with your specific requirements.

Extensive R&D Produce Innovative SolGlass® Technology

LightSources and our European partner, LightTech, have a state-of-the-art glass manufacturing facility in Hungary where we conduct extensive research and development. The combined resources of these leading experts in the industry resulted in a new innovative patented UV bulb for the tanning industry, SolGlass®.
SolGlass® bulbs are superior to previously used bulbs due to two main factors in their design, transparency and a proprietary phosphor blend.  The transparency allows for the UV rays to pass through with a broader spectrum than any other bulb.  This produces a deeper brown tan similar to the sun, rather than the orange tint from the typical tanning bulb.
The proprietary phosphor blend combined with the short wave UVB rays creates instant color, and a longer lasting pigmentation.  This unique innovative bulb is the only lamp in the industry with this type of broad UV spectrum, as it allows 75% of all UVB waves to pass through, compared to only 36% of the other common tanning bulbs.
Safety is a number one priority to us. LightSources along with all of our affiliates take great care to ensure the safety of all our products.  The SolGlass® proprietary technology meets all United States and European guidelines and regulations such as the 0.3W/ m2 regulations for sunbeds.
This unprecedented technology has resulted in happy customers. We have received positive feedback from end-users all around the world, who reported excellent results. See our website for more information about SolGlass® and LightSource’s other lighting solutions.

Learn More about our European Glassworks

LightSources and our European partner are the world’s top designers, engineers and manufacturers of innovative, high-tech lighting solutions.  One reason we are able to offer our customers the flexibility of short runs and quick turnaround times is we own and operate one of the most advanced glassworks in Europe.  Located in Dunakeszi, Hungary, our state-of-the-art facility opened in 2001 and provides us the ability to manufacture open, closed, FS and germicidal glass.  Our proprietary SolGlass® is also manufactured here.

Our customers have come to know they can rely on us.  Our abundant resources allow us to not only control the whole process involved in manufacturing the four major glass types used in most lamps, but to efficiently supply the products our clients need, when they need them.  Within our twenty-acre facility, we have internal chemistry and phosphor capabilities that offer clients a range of proprietary and fully customized lighting solutions.

The germicidal soft glass we produce is our most open glass and allows for the highest UV transmission (91%).  It is used in a number of applications to treat and sterilize air, water, and surfaces from bacteria, viruses and pathogens.

Our open glass is commonly used in tanning applications in North America. At 297nm, it offers approximately a 35% transmission and allows a balanced ratio of UV-A and B light to pass through the glass.  LightTech’s closed glass is the most popular choice of the European tanning industry.  It emits more UVA, while at the same time, offers the least amount of UVB energy.

The FS Glass produced at the Dunakeszi facility is used for dermatological purposes to treat specific skin conditions.  The properties of FS glass are right between open and closed glass and use a very narrow band phosphor for pure UV-B lamps.

Another type of glass exclusively produced at our facility is SolGlass®.  This proprietary glass offers the most significant innovation in tanning since the sun and is based on the combination of new glass technology and a proprietary phosphor blend.  SolGlass® is a prime example and result of the combined research and development efforts of both our North American and European operations.  See our website to learn about LightSources and LightTech glass.

UVC Light Technology Provides Safe & Clean Drinking Water

Throughout most of the developed countries in the world, there are standards and regulations governing drinking water.  In America, we rely on the 1974 US Environmental Protection Agency’s Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), which is a federal law designed to protect public drinking water supplies throughout the country. Under the SDWA, the EPA sets standards for drinking water quality, and with help from its partners, implements various technical and financial programs to safeguard our drinking water.

While drinking water is essential to human survival, only 2.5% of the earth’s water is drinkable and only 1% clean enough to drink.  In addition as the world population increases, so does the demand for clean drinking water.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that, “Water, sanitation and hygiene has the potential to prevent at least 9.1% of the global disease burden and 6.3% of all deaths.”  They add that the impact of “clean water  technologies on public health in the U.S. is estimated to have had a rate of return of 23 to 1 for investments in water filtration and chlorination during the first half of the 20th century”.

Today, we also recognize the importance of providing our communities with safe drinking water that in the process of purifying it does not further harm the environment.  With more than 156,000 municipal drinking water systems in the U.S. alone that serve 90% of our population, the methods we use to treat water are critical. This is why germicidal UVC water purification is quickly becoming an effective alternative to chemical disinfection.

Unlike traditional chemical treatment, UVC light disinfection has the advantage of effectively eliminating cryptosporidium and giardia bacterium.  Another benefit to germicidal UV water purification includes the fact that biological contaminants cannot build resistance to UV light.  Also consumers like the fact that the process does not alter the taste, odor or pH value of the water.

Germicidal UV water purification requires only a short radiation time, ease of use and minimal maintenance as well as low operating costs.  Furthermore, while germicidal UVC light does not entirely replace chemical disinfection for non-point-of-use, it does significantly reduce the need for chemicals.  Once water leaves the irradiated area, the UVC method has no disinfection residual to protect it and supplemental chemicals are required to protect water sitting for days in pipes before it is consumed.  See our website to learn more about our line of cost-effective germicidal lamps.

LightSources in the U.S. and our strategic partner in Europe, LightTech represent the leading high-tech designers and manufacturers in the lamp industry today.  Our products are used world-wide in a multitude of applications and industries such as our UV air treatment systems that provide industries a way to disinfect and improve the quality of air without the need for toxic chemicals.

The Technology behind UVC Germicidal Lamps

Our commitment to LightSources and LightTech’s clients goes beyond designing, engineering and manufacturing a wide range of premium germicidal UVC lamps.   We want to make sure our customers know how our lamps are designed, the materials we use, and the manufacturing process.

While any of our team is always ready to answer questions, we also make it easy to access a whole lot of information right on our website including how germicidal UVC technology works.  In addition we provide answers to a range of questions such as how to handle broken lamps, the proper disposal method for mercury-added lamps, UVC germicidal lamp drawings, and much more.

Under our educational section for UVC germicidal lamps, we offer a Germicidal Lamp Basics report that explains in depth what a germicidal lamp is and how it is works.  Information includes defining a germicidal lamp as:
  • A UV (ultra-violet) lamp that emits a significant portion of its radiative power in the UV-C Band (100 to 280nm).
  • Ozone producing UV lamp that produces UV energy of wavelengths shorter than 220nm that decomposes oxygen, O², producing ozone, O³.
  • A low-pressure mercury lamp in which the envelope has high transmittance for 254nm radiation.

The publication further explains how the lamps generate energy in the UV spectrum to effectively destroy bacteria, fungi and viruses (microorganisms).  The UV disinfection targets genetic material to get to the nucleic acids.  Once the UV penetrates through the cell and is absorbed by the nucleic acids, a rearrangement of the genetic information occurs that interferes with the cell's ability to reproduce.  If a cell loses the ability to reproduce, it is considered dead and unable to multiply to infectious numbers within a host.

When you choose LightSources and LightTech as your manufacturer, keep in mind that almost everything about our lamp can be customized, including length and diameter, power, fitting sockets, and ceramic bases.  Our proprietary ceramic bases are resistant to UVC radiation, ozone, heat and moisture and provide a high-quality appearance.  Please contact us to learn more about UVC germicidal lamps and other UV light applications.

LightSources and its affiliated companies represent the best high-tech designers and manufacturers in the specialty lamp manufacturing industry. World’s Largest Signs

Throughout the world there are many different types of enormous, lighted outdoor signs.   The neon sign that looms over the Palace Station Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada is one example.  As the largest free-standing sign in the world, it consists of over 6 miles of neon and fluorescent lights and contains more than 12,000 individual light bulbs.  The sign is 279-feet-tall and 40-feet-thick with a surface area of more than 70,000 square feet.  An even larger sign had stood in its place but was blow over in a severe wind storm.

The biggest figural (signs based on human or animal figures) neon sign in the country is in Saginaw, Michigan.  The sign is 35 feet tall and 50 feet long.  Other large neon signs can be found in Piccadilly Circus in London, Tokyo’s Ginza and Shibuya, and Shanghai’s Nanjinj Road to name a few.

Also over the last few years, we have seen larger and larger digital billboards become part of a city’s landscape.  Two years ago, New York Times Square went live with the highest resolution and most expensive digital billboard to-date in North America.  The new billboard spans an entire city block and is eight stories tall and almost as long as a football field.  The display has a higher resolution than the best top-of-the-line television sets and is comprised of nearly 24 million LED pixels, made up of miniature red, blue and green light.  The screen represents one of the most expensive pieces of outdoor advertisement, and at the time it was installed, it cost more than $2.5 million for four weeks.

Another huge digital billboard in the U.S. is the 65-foot-tall and 320-foot-long sign at Harmon Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard in Las Vegas.  The billboard serves as a display for high-definition advertisements and special events, and has an ultra-high pixel count of 7K or 7,360 by 1,440 pixels.

LightSources and our affiliated companies are among the leading light bulb manufacturers in the world. As part of our group, Voltarc Technologies Inc. is a recognized leader in the signage industry and architectural lighting and the leading manufacturer of fluorescent and neon sign lighting components and specialty fluorescent lamps.

What is the Most Energy Efficient Light Bulb?

At the LightSources group, we recognize that it is important to produce our energy-efficient lamps in the most environmentally-friendly way.  To meet that goal, we continue to develop environmentally-friendly technologies as well as implement green business practices.   We also provide on-going training for employees regarding the latest environmental issues and proper practices within our industry.

While we strive to lessen our carbon footprint and incorporate sustainable methods into our day-to-day operations, we thought it is important to discuss lighting options for our own homes.  Any visit to a do-it-yourself big box store, indicates the selection of energy-efficient light bulbs intended for home use is getting bigger and more complicated.

The U.S. Department of Energy website offers insight into how to light your home with the same amount of light but less expensively.  Data shows 5% of the average U.S. household’s energy budget goes to lighting  and that one of the easiest way to reduce your energy bills are to use energy-efficient light bulbs.

Although no longer being manufactured, traditional incandescent bulbs used a lot of energy to produce light and 90% of the energy was given off as heat.  However when we look at today’s shelves and shelves of bulbs filled with an assortment of halogen incandescent, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and light emitting diodes (LEDs), it can be confusing on what to buy.

While halogen incandescent lamps meet the federal regulations, there are now better options available.  The Dept. of Energy states compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) are simply curly versions of the long tube fluorescent lights we are all familiar with.  Although they are more expensive than traditional incandescent bulbs, CFLs typically pay for themselves in less than nine months.  An ENERGY STAR rated CFL “uses about one-fourth the energy and lasts ten times longer than a comparable traditional incandescent bulb that puts out the same amount of light.”

Light emitting diodes (LEDs) represent the fastest developing light technologies. ENERGY STAR LEDs are rated as using only “20%–25% of the energy and last up to 25 times longer than the traditional incandescent bulbs they replace.”  They also use less energy and last 8 to 25 times longer than halogen incandescent bulbs.

LightSources and our affiliated companies represent the leading high-tech designers and manufacturers in the lamp industry today.  Our products are used world-wide in a multitude of applications and industries such as our UV air treatment systems that offer patent-protected, OEM-oriented solutions.  Regardless of whether you are a small or large company, or an entrepreneur with a new product idea; trust us with your specialty lighting needs.
