UV Treatment for Ships Ballast Water

UV treatment for ships ballast water is providing a solution to the new requirements of the Ballast Water Treatment Convention (BWTC).  New requirements are taking effect in September of 2017, enforced by the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC).  The MEPC is a division of the IMO, the International Maritime Organization which is a global effort of the United Nations.
Treatment of ballast water in ships is imperative to the survival of our oceans as we know them.  When ships take on ballast water for stability of the vessel, they often release it into foreign waters in another region, which can have devastating effects.  As has happened in several oceans around the world, when marine organisms consisting of bacteria, viruses, and some small sea creatures are released into a foreign environment they can invade and destroy the current eco-system.
Some devastating consequences of the invasion of foreign marine life have resulted in diminishing a once dominant fishing industry into a ghost town, and in some cases toxic red algae actually causing death of most marine life and some humans.
Methods of Treating Ballast Water
Of the three methods for treating ships ballast water, UV germicidal lamps are providing a safe, effective, and cost-efficient method.  Some systems may use filtration, but this is not always effective as some bacteria are so small filters are not reliable.  Some methods use chemicals, but this requires constant maintenance and can cause corrosion of equipment and require dichlorination.
UV treatment is becoming the popular choice for effectively eradicating harmful organisms.  UV light, with wavelength emittance of an effective 254 nm (nanometer) provides effective germ killing solutions with low maintenance.

UV Lamps Used in Various Industries

UV technology is a process used in various applications.  Ultraviolet light has several qualities at various wavelengths, and many industries are harnessing the power of UV lamps creating better products with cost effective methods.
UV Curing Used in Automaker’s Processes
Automotive manufacturers realize the benefit of using UV curing to treat polymers such as varnishes, inks and specialty resins.  When treating their products, various automotive parts, a photochemical process occurs that creates tougher, more stain resistant parts with a hardened or glossy finish.
Using UV lamps provides automakers with an advantage of curing many parts at one time.  Parts can be moving from one area to another on a conveyor while simply curing their product before the next process.   This is a seamless and very low labor intensive process, thus saving money.
UV Curing Lamps Used in Printing Processes
UV light can instantly dry and harden inks on various paper products including corrugated materials, providing a smooth glossy surface.  This method of curing printing products provided added benefits over heat induced infrared drying by instantly drying inks which prevents them from shrinking, or having an uneven finish.
UV Lamps for Sterilization of Medication Equipment
UV radiation provides effective germicidal treatment of medical equipment including syringes, dialysis machines and equipment, test strips, hearing aids and many other products, devices and surfaces.
UV Treatment of Air and Water
UV air purification systems are used in several settings, especially those requiring a clean and sterile environment such as hospitals.  UV lamps are effective at removing harmful contaminants from the air, reducing the chance of transmitting airborne illnesses and making it easier for some people to breathe.
UV lamps are used in water treatment systems as a very effective and safe method of removing harmful bacteria, viruses and microorganisms.  UV radiation provides safe drinking water in public areas, and is used in the shipping industry world-wide for eradicating harmful seawater organisms in ship ballast water.
These are just a few examples of the various industries that are utilizing the benefits of UV light in their products and process applications.  Contact the experts at LightSources today for more information.

Food Safety through UVC Germicidal Treatment

Ultraviolet light is a safe and effective FDA approved method of eradicating harmful contaminants in food and water.  The next time you grab some fruit or vegetables from the grocer’s display as they’re laid out under ultraviolet light getting a nice misting of water, you may not realize that the food you are purchasing for your home is currently being sterilized for microbial organisms and bacteria.  Ultraviolet light exposure at the proper wavelength in the UV spectrum provides effective irradiation of harmful bacteria and viruses.
This treatment of food, water and air sterilization is commonly used as an effective method to provide safe and clean products for human consumption.  When exposed to UVC light in the range of 200 to 280 nm (nanometers), this germicidal range is effective at inactivating viruses and bacteria, while 254 nm is most effective at eradicating microbial organisms in food and water.
UVC germicidal lamps provide safe and effective methods for food suppliers to provide healthy food products.  Not only is the food treated with UVC lights, but also the water used for treating the vegetables and food products, ensuring a clean environment all around.  This method of sterilization is approved by the FDA, and is effective with all food products, including meats and sea foods, and working surfaces.
Many industries are using UVC germicidal treatment as an effective and cost-saving method of ensuring safety in their products, and a way of providing more effective germ killing results with no residual chemical use.
