Ballast Water Treatment Methods for Total Compliance

The new Ballast Water Treatment Convention has been in full force since September of 2017, and if you are looking for suppliers to help you with compliant treatment systems you need to contact the LightSources group.  New requirements are being enforced by the Marine Enforcement Protection Committee (MEPC), a division of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).  This is part of a global effort by the United Nations to protect the world’s oceans and sustainability.
Hazards of Ballast Water in Ships
When ships use ballast water for balance during international trips, they will pick up water in one region after unloading cargo to aid in balance while sailing through the water.  When landing in another port in a different country, the ballast water is released into a foreign environment and wreaks havoc on the marine life and ecosystem.  In some cases, contaminated ballast water has wiped out entire fishing communities with invasive foreign species like poisonous jellyfish or multiplying mussels taking over the new environment.   These invasive species typically have natural predators in their home environment, but when deposited into new environments without predators they multiply and take over.
UV Treatment of Ballast Water Proven Safe and Effective
Ultraviolet (UV) technology is proven to be safe and extremely effective in eradiating allharmful contaminants in the ballast water of ships and is used worldwide in ballast water treatment systems.  UV technology meets the new requirements enforced by the MEPC and meets all US Coast Guard regulations.   UV germicidal lamps provide safe and effective methods for treating water, without the use of chemicals which can pose a health hazard, corrode equipment and may still require dichlorination to protect against harmful effects of the chlorine.
LightSources is a leader in specialty UV germicidal lamps, used in sterilization and purification systems of air and water in a multitude of applications worldwide.  With powerful germ-killing technology, UV radiation emitted at 254 nanometer (nm), is proven to destroy harmful bacteria, viruses and marine life in ballast water treatment systems.

Health Advantages of In-Duct Air Purification System

In-duct air purification systems are widely used around the globe in many settings to purify the air providing numerous health benefits.  Purifying and sterilizing the air we breathe is very important to many people, especially people with respiratory conditions like asthma, or those with a compromised immune system.  In-duct air purification is commonly used in nursing homes, hospitals, and many other commercial and residential settings.  Ultraviolet (UV) purification of air is extremely effective at cleansing the air and improving the health of all occupants.

Effective and Safe Air Purification with UVC Technology

UV germicidal technology is used in a multitude of applications to sterilize air, water and surfaces with safe and effective UV radiation.   Ultraviolet wavelength emitted at 254 nanometer (nm) is powerful technology that instantly kills harmful contaminants while not producing any harmful side effects.  UV purification cleanses the air and is also effective at eliminating odors caused by contaminants, leaving purified and sterilized air that smells fresh and clean.

UV air purification will not emit ozone like some other air purification systems will, which can contribute to the eroding of HVAC components affecting the entire equipment.  Ozone is known to contribute to the corrosion of the cooling system in AC equipment by separating aluminum fins from the copper lines within the cooling coils.

UV Glue Curing Creates Unbreakable Bond

Ultraviolet radiation energy is used as a catalyst to instantly cure polymers, creating an instant bond in as quickly as three seconds.  This photochemical reaction is often used on polymers such as silicone glue, polyurethane and epoxies which will instantly cure when exposed to UV light.
UV curing of polymers provides many advantages over other methods such as chemical application and air drying.   UV curing provides the quickest cure time when compared to these other methods, while providing a stronger, unbreakable bond.   When air drying inks, coatings, adhesives and glues, the surface is exposed to outer contaminants in the air which can create an inconsistent surface.  UV curing is also much faster than air drying, drastically improving cycle times and productivity, leading to increased profitability.
When using chemicals to dry surface coatings and bonding agents, it can be costly and time consuming while still not providing the same consistent and quick output as UV curing.   Chemical drying processes can also create an unsafe environment to employees by exposing them to harmful contaminants.  An air controlled evaporation system is often necessary to remove fumes or toxins from chemical use.  UV curing dries so quickly it leaves a consistent and high-quality surface that is reinforced and resistant to scratching or breaking.
UV glue curing provides many benefits over other methods, with precision accuracy to target specific areas.  By projecting the UV light directly towards the area of polymer requiring hardening, manufactures can precisely cure specific areas without affecting surrounding areas.
Lightsources has vast knowledge and expertise with UV curing applications, with skilled design engineers available to assist with determining the best type of UV lamps for your process.  We assist OEMs large and small with the perfect UV lighting solution, no matter the scope of your project.  UV curing is used in a multitude of industrial processes around the globe, including screen printing, graphic design, automotive, aerospace and many other applications.
