New Requirements for Ballast Water Treatment Systems

The new requirements are here for the Ballast Water Management Convention, taking effect September of 2017 with global enforcement by the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), a subsidiary group of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).  The main goal of the new convention is to establish procedures and standards for the treatment of ships’ ballast water to prevent the spread of invasive marine organisms from one region to another.
Effective September 8, 2017, new terms of the Convention require all ships sailing through international waters to utilize an effective ballast water treatment system to eliminate the threat of aquatic organisms that may be present in their ballast water.    All ships will be required to have a ballast water treatment plan specific to their ship.  Regulations vary based on the age of the ship and ballast water capacity, although all required systems must be compliant to US Coast Guard Regulations.
LightSources Provides Effective Ballast Water Treatment Technology
The LightSources group is an industry leader in UV germicidal applications, manufacturing superior UV lamps and components used in air and water purification systems worldwide.  UV technology is proven extremely effective at eradicating microorganisms, even bacteria and viruses naked to the human eye.
UV treatment of ships’ ballast water is highly effective, better for the environment and cost effective with very little maintenance required.  With no need to purchase chemicals such as powerful chlorine a UV system can operate for extended hours with no maintenance and provides no volatile organic compounds (VOC) into the environment.
The LightSources group offers proven solutions with UV germicidal applications worldwide, with facilities in the United States, China and Europe our vast resources support quick turn-around time with high quality products.  Our Low Pressure (LP) Amalgam lamps operate with an increased efficiency of 30-35% over other comparable lamps, and leave a small footprint which is convenient when operating in limited space.  Our proprietary LongLife technology utilized in our LP Amalgam lamps offers superior UV germicidal effectiveness at the most optimum wavelength of 254nm.
Our Medium Pressure (MPUV) germicidal lamps are also extremely effective with even smaller footprints that are desirable on smaller ships.
The LightSources Group is a leading UV Germicidal Lamp manufacturer, with lamps for virtually any UV sanitation application for water or air.  Contact us today to learn more about our solution for the new Ballast Water Treatment Convention regulations.
