Phototherapy Promotes Healing for Skin Disorders

Light Therapy, also known as Phototherapy, is recognized world-wide for providing many health benefits for a wide variety of medical conditions.  Phototherapy is most often provided in fluorescent light, emitted at specific wavelengths to treat specific conditions.
Phototherapy for Skin Conditions
One of the most common conditions treated with phototherapy is jaundice in newborn babies.  Babies are born with a certain degree of jaundice, which occurs when toxins in the body are not broken down completely by the liver.  This causes a yellowing of the whites of the eyes and the skin, as toxins build up in the body.  Bilirubin is a yellow compound that is usually broken down by the liver, but when jaundice occurs and babies need help, shortwave UV light is used to breakdown the bilirubin.
These lights are called “bili lights”, and are highly effective when exposed to bare skin. Babies are placed under UV lights with nothing but a diaper for maximum exposure.  Specific lighting can be sent home with parents with instructions to use for a specified period of time.
Psoriasis and Skin Disorders Treated with Phototherapy
Light therapy is proven effective with healing many skin disorders and especially for people suffering from psoriasis, acne and eczema.   Exposure to UV light from UVA and UVB lamps is proven to decelerate the growth of skin cells and aid healing to those suffering with psoriasis.  UV light is also used to treat eczema which is an inflammatory condition caused from an overactive immune system.  Exposure to fluorescent lamps suppress the immune system and reduce inflamed, swollen and itchy skin.
Acne is a result of bacteria in the skin causing inflammation in the form of a pimple when the immune system attacks the bacteria.  Red and blue light therapy in wavelengths of 600 – 700 nanometer (nm) is combined to treat acne with successful results.  Red Light therapy is proven to sooth inflammation and stimulate cell growth to promote healing and regeneration.  Blue light at 415 nm is most effective at killing bacteria, preventing breakouts from acne.
