UV Light Keeps Kitchens and Restaurants Cleaner

Restaurants have been finding innovative ways to keep patrons safe from germs while keeping their doors open. Ultraviolet (UV) light and the powerful germicidal benefits of UVC energy is nothing new, although restaurant owners are taking notice of the many ways this germicidal technology can help their business. UVC lamps are part of many systems worldwide such as air purification systems, water disinfection systems and surface sterilization systems.

Where UVC Lamps Help Restaurants

High intensity UVC lamps have proven efficacy in eliminating a wide range of harmful pathogens including viruses, bacteria, mildew, and mold. This germicidal technology can be harnessed in various systems to protect food directly in addition to protecting surfaces, water, and the air in enclosed spaces. Here are some of the most popular areas of installing UV sterilization lamps for restaurants and food service applications:

Food irradiation - The short wave electromagnetic energy has powerful sterilization effects, keeping food safe with UV germicidal irradiation. UV lamps can help to keep food fresher, longer, and prevent early spoilage as well as preventing many harmful germs like E. Coli and Salmonella.

Kitchen hood exhaust systems – UV energy has the ability to prevent the buildup of grease in commercial kitchen hoods. This mitigates fire risk, reduces equipment maintenance, and prevents foul odors that can occur from grease buildup.

Keep walk-in freezers clean – UV lamps prevent mold and mildew from forming in cool, damp places like walk-in freezers which is critically important to storing fresh food and meeting health code regulations.

Air sterilization in eating areas – sterilizing the air that circulates through a restaurant’s HVAC system helps to keep patrons safer with cleaner, purified air. UV lamps in HVAC systems keep the air cleaner by eliminating airborne pathogens and removing foul odors from the air.

Meet Industrial Air Quality Demands with UV Air Treatment

post 85
Ultraviolet (UV) air treatment systems are used worldwide in many residential, commercial and industrial processes to clean and purify the air. Many industrial applications are mandated to purify the air after producing toxins such as in rubber, plastic or textile manufacturing.  Air purification systems are a recognized and approved treatment method to meet industrial air quality regulations.
UV germicidal lamps are proven to eliminate airborne germs which cause serious illnesses such as viruses, bacteria, mold, mildew and various microorganisms. UV ozone lamps also eliminate foul odors from the air and UV oxidation is proven to remove pesticides, insecticides, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Many businesses have converted from chemical treatment systems to UV air treatment systems which offer many advantages.

Advantages of Industrial UV Air Purification

UV air purification systems are recognized as highly effective and are replacing chemical treatment methods in air purification and water sterilization processes worldwide.  UV air purification offers many benefits over chemical treatment methods such as effectiveness, environmental safety and affordability.

UV air treatment systems do not release any harmful byproducts into the environment as chemicals do and are much simpler to maintain with no need to purchase, store or dispose of harmful chemicals. UV disinfection lamps provide affordable and effective air purification methods to many commercial, manufacturing and industrial processes.

World’s Largest Signs

Throughout the world there are many different types of enormous, lighted outdoor signs.   The neon sign that looms over the Palace Station Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada is one example.  As the largest free-standing sign in the world, it consists of over 6 miles of neon and fluorescent lights and contains more than 12,000 individual light bulbs.  The sign is 279-feet-tall and 40-feet-thick with a surface area of more than 70,000 square feet.  An even larger sign had stood in its place but was blow over in a severe wind storm.

The biggest figural (signs based on human or animal figures) neon sign in the country is in Saginaw, Michigan.  The sign is 35 feet tall and 50 feet long.  Other large neon signs can be found in Piccadilly Circus in London, Tokyo’s Ginza and Shibuya, and Shanghai’s Nanjinj Road to name a few.

Also over the last few years, we have seen larger and larger digital billboards become part of a city’s landscape.  Two years ago, New York Times Square went live with the highest resolution and most expensive digital billboard to-date in North America.  The new billboard spans an entire city block and is eight stories tall and almost as long as a football field.  The display has a higher resolution than the best top-of-the-line television sets and is comprised of nearly 24 million LED pixels, made up of miniature red, blue and green light.  The screen represents one of the most expensive pieces of outdoor advertisement, and at the time it was installed, it cost more than $2.5 million for four weeks.

Another huge digital billboard in the U.S. is the 65-foot-tall and 320-foot-long sign at Harmon Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard in Las Vegas.  The billboard serves as a display for high-definition advertisements and special events, and has an ultra-high pixel count of 7K or 7,360 by 1,440 pixels.

LightSources and our affiliated companies are among the leading light bulb manufacturers in the world. As part of our group, Voltarc Technologies Inc. is a recognized leader in the signage industry and architectural lighting and the leading manufacturer of fluorescent and neon sign lighting components and specialty fluorescent lamps.

LightSources and our affiliated companies represent the leading high-tech designers and manufacturers in the lamp industry today. Our products are used world-wide in a multitude of applications and industries such as our UV air treatment systems that provide industries a way to disinfect and improve the quality of air without the need for toxic chemicals.   Please contact us to learn more about our broad range of standard and custom lighting solutions.

Early Neon Signs

Many of us are old enough to still remember when classic neon signs were a common sight throughout our city’s landscapes.  Although used worldwide, neon signs were very popular in the U.S. starting from the early 1920s to around 1960.  In fact New York City’s Time Square was the site of some of the world's most famous neon signs of which many were designed by Douglas Leigh, a pioneer in outdoor signage.  As a testament to the widespread use of the signs in the U.S., by 1940 there were almost 2,000 shops producing neon signs.

Neon signs consist of electric lights made from long, luminous gas-discharge tubes filled with rarefied neon or other gases.  Wikipedia explains that, “Neon lights are a type of cold cathode gas-discharge light.”  The sealed glass tube has metal electrodes on each end and is filled with several different types of gases at low pressure.  When electric volts are sent to the electrodes, the gas in the tube ionizes and emits colored light.  In order to produce various colors of light, a mix of different gases and chemicals are used such as: hydrogen (red), helium (yellow), carbon dioxide (white), and mercury (blue).

Probably one of the reasons why neon signage went out of style was due to the nature of its labor intensive, customized production process.  Since the signs are almost an art form to produce, were it not for the fact that the neon signs had such a long lifespan; it would not have been economically feasible even back then to produce the signs.  With the decline of the industry, many cities are now making efforts to preserve and restore the antique signs.

Today, Voltarc Technologies Inc., which is a part of the LightSources group, is one of the most recognized leaders in the signage industry and architectural lighting.  Our highly customized and standard products include fluorescent sign lamps, neon tubing, long lamps, U-lamps, and our unique cup-cathode construction that provides unsurpassed electrical life to the TriLight Max Series of fluorescent lamps.

LightSources and its affiliated companies – LCD Lighting, Voltarc, LightTech, and Cerlux represent the leading high-tech designers and manufacturers in the lamp industry today.  Our products are used world-wide in a multitude of applications and industries such as our avionic display backlighting that is part of the National Defense and US Space Program.
