Is Your Ballast Water Treatment System Compliant?

lighting-technology

Since the most recent ratification of the Ballast Water Management Convention (BWMC), all ships traveling in international waters must maintain their ballast water and sediments to certain standards. A method of controlling and eliminating the transfer of harmful marine organisms and pathogens is required with a ballast water treatment system. The ballast water treatment technologies must meet US Coast Guard standards and is enforceable by the Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) a division of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The most recent ratification of a majority of states makes the BWMC enforceable globally with compliant ballast water management systems required on all newly constructed vessels with an implementation scale applying to existing ships. Port State authorities have the right to inspect all vessels for verification of a valid certificate, a ballast water record book and verification of an approved ballast water treatment plan. Port State control officers also have the right to sample a ship’s ballast water to verify an acceptable level of sediments and organisms.

Ballast Water Treatment Technologies

There are a few different methods used to treat ballast water such as chemical use involving chlorination, physical methods such as filtration and ultraviolet (UV) radiation technology.  Chemical use requires the purchase and storing of a large amount of chemicals as well as maintaining the system for effectiveness. Chemicals may cause additional problems with polluting the water and may require additional sanitation steps.

Filtration may catch some harmful organisms such as jellyfish or mussels which can wreak havoc when invading foreign ports although will not catch all toxins, bacteria and viruses. UV technology involves the use of specially designed UVC germicidal lamps which emit precisely the right amount of UV radiation at the proper wavelength.  UV lamps instantly eradicate harmful bacteria and viruses at 254 nm by penetrating the DNA of harmful microorganisms and rendering them unable to replicate.

UV lamps are proven effective in many water treatment systems as well as commercial and industrial air purification applications.  UV ballast water treatment systems are compliant with all regulations, are cost effective and easy to maintain. Be sure to work with an experienced UV lamp supplier for effective sterilization with maximum energy efficiency.

Get Relief from Eczema with UV Light Therapy

For those suffering from Eczema, finding relief from the itchy patches of dry skin is at the top of their list.  While there is no known cure for eczema, there are many treatments out there in the form of corticosteroids, ointments and the UV light therapy lamp.  Ultraviolet (UV) light delivered in wavelengths of UVB, narrow band UVB and UVA is proven to be effective at controlling outbreaks and improving the bothersome symptoms of eczema.
Light therapy, also referred to as phototherapy, is delivered in a controlled environment such as a doctor’s office with a specialty light therapy lamp or may be prescribed for home use under a doctor’s care.  Some patients may notice an improvement in their eczema during the summer, these patients are more likely to respond with positive results from phototherapy.  If outbreaks are worse in the winter months for those living in the northern hemisphere, a UV phototherapy lamp can help to control symptoms for these patients.
How Does Phototherapy Help Eczema?
Light is divided into colors, emitted in wavelengths which is measured in nanometers (nm).  Ultraviolet light in the UVA spectrum of 315nm to 400nm, and UVB light in the range of 280nm to 315nm, with narrow band UVB at 310nm are proven to successfully treat eczema.  UV light therapy brings relief to patients by successfully reducing inflammation and suppressing the overactive immune system.
The narrow band UVB lamp is the most common phototherapy lamp prescribed to treat most types of eczema.  The narrow band UVB eczema lamp provides UV radiation in wavelengths which mimic the sun to aid in clearing up eczema symptoms and preventing outbreaks.
Psoralen is a medication used during UVA treatments which helps to prepare the skin to absorb the UV therapy to the optimum level.

Our Proprietary LongLife+™ Technology

At LightSources and LightTech, we bring to our customers a proprietary special coating that can be applied to all of our germicidal lamp products.  Our LongLife+™ technology consists of a chemical compound that is applied to the inside of our lamps and makes them not only last longer but also run more efficiently.  The special coating also eliminates accelerated depreciation, which is a common problem associated with higher intensity lamps.

While the actual performance of any lamp depends on the operating conditions, laboratory tests show that the lifespan of a lamp with our proprietary LongLife+ coating lasts up to 16,000 hours.  In comparison, germicidal lamps generally have a lifespan of around 9,000 hours.  The additional operational hours make a germicidal lamp coated with LongLife+ a good investment since they will need to be replaced less frequently.  Our UVC lamps also have an improved end-of-life performance and maintain up to 80% of their output right up to the end of their 16,000 hour lifespan.

Another benefit of LightSources and LightTech’s technology is that it is environmentally friendly, which is an important part of our company’s philosophy.  Since LongLife+ lamps last longer, they help to reduce waste and protect our valuable natural resources.   Furthermore, our low mercury (Hg) technology means that there is less than 5mg Hg on our standard lamps and less than 10mg Hg on our pellet amalgam lamps.  To compare, an average competitor’s amalgam lamps contain 30+ mg Hg.

We encourage you to contact us for more information about our cutting-edge technology.  Your company can save both time and money with our LongLife+ lamps that require less frequent replacements and improved end-of-life performance.
