UVC Robots Are Making an Appearance in Many Places

UVC robots can vary in shape or size, from small handheld devices that float across countertops to large, autonomous robots that look like a big fancy space heater on wheels. The UVC germicidal lamps mounted to these robots are the key components in providing high levels of sterilization against many known harmful viruses, bacteria and pathogens. In light of current world events, many hospitals began incorporating UVC robots to sterilize patient rooms, bathrooms and hallways and other public places are taking notice.

You might now see a UVC robot making its way through an airport, in schools and on college campuses and are being utilized in jails and correctional facilities.  UVC radiation has long been known to eradicate many harmful germs including serious viruses, bacteria, and superbugs like vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).  UVC sterilization lamps are known to kill tuberculosis bacteria as well as SARS, a Cov-2 coronavirus strain.

UV light emitted in the UVC wavelength precisely between 250 and 260 nm is proven to kill many harmful pathogens quickly and effectively. UV light emitted from roaming UVC robots can disinfect hard to reach places in much less time than it would take for a thorough human cleaning.  Combining standard human disinfection practices with UVC robots, however, is more effective than utilizing only one method of sterilization.

UV HVAC Systems for Hospitals and Homes

9.13.14
Ultraviolet light is a powerful disinfectant, sterilizing surfaces, water and air in many environments.  The power of UVC radiation was discovered decades ago and UVC lamps are now found in many sterilization applications, providing quick, effective and cost-efficient sterilization solutions.  The ability for UV light to kill pathogens in air and water was proven scientifically early in the 20th century.  UV lamps have been used in air treatment systems in hospitals since the 1930’s to prevent the spread of diseases including tuberculosis and measles.

UVC Lamps Kill Many Viruses and Bacteria

UVC lamps replicate the powerful UV electromagnetic radiation from the sun, proven to eliminate harmful viruses, bacteria and pathogens in air and surface sterilization systems.  UVC germicidal lamps are proven to be effective against many types of viruses including influenza (flu), rhinoviruses (common cold), severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).   UV light also eliminates bacteria such as many variations of Streptococcus including Staphylococcus aureus (Staph infection).

UVC lamps, when properly installed in HVAC systems, are known to prevent the spread of airborne illnesses by destroying viruses on contact.  UV HVAC systems are also known as ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) systems and target air contaminants like viruses, bacteria and mold spores.  UV light has the ability to penetrate the DNA of these living organisms and render them unable to replicate which leaves them harmless.

Commercial and Residential Benefits of UV Lamps in HVAC Systems

Hospitals and many commercial and industrial applications have been using UV air sterilization systems for decades to disinfect potentially dangerous environments.  UV HVAC systems used in hospitals help to prevent the spread of airborne illnesses in patient rooms, operating rooms and common areas.  UV lamps can be installed in the main HVAC unit aimed at the coils to prevent the spread of contaminants through your heating and cooling system as well as in air ducts.  Stand alone units can be placed in patient bathrooms for further protection in areas known to spread bacteria and viruses.

UV HVAC systems are becoming more popular in residential homes as many people become aware of the benefits and the ease in which you can disinfect the air in your home.  This is very beneficial to people with compromised immune systems or underlying health conditions, especially respiratory illnesses like asthma.

UVC Lamps for HVAC Units

Using the proper UVC germicidal lamps with proper installation is key to achieve maximum benefit.  LightSources understands UVC radiation and how to harness the most effective, germ-killing wavelength for maximum germicidal effectiveness.  We offer a wide range of UV germicidal lamps including medium output lamps, high output lamps patented amalgam technology and custom, specialty designed lamps.  LightSources is a valuable supplier of high quality lamps, bases and sockets to OEMs worldwide.

Ultraviolet Light Key in Disinfecting Hospitals

post 95
Ultraviolet light has long been known to provide powerful disinfecting properties and is now more than ever a hot topic to sterilize hospitals, operating rooms and medical equipment.  Hospital acquired infections (HAIs) are a real concern, especially in the midst of a global pandemic where hospitals are treating highly contagious people with serious disease.  Cleaning and sterilizing hospital rooms and equipment is critical to prevent the spread of disease through airborne viruses and contaminated surfaces.

UV Light Kills Viruses on Surfaces

UV light is proven to kill viruses, bacteria and airborne contaminants when using UVC germicidal lamps for air treatment systems, designed to emit the proper wavelength of light.  UV light from the sun is emitted in UVA, UVB or UVC wavelengths, with UVC being the most powerful form of germicidal electromagnetic radiation.  UVC light from the sun is mostly absorbed by the ozone layer, although scientists and lighting specialists have designed UVC lamps which mimic the powerful, germ-killing wavelengths.

UVC germicidal lamps are used in UV surface sterilization equipment to treat hospital equipment, surfaces, beds and entire hospital rooms.  Scientists have even developed robots which roam through a hospital room and effectively eliminate bacteria and viruses on contact.  According to this article in Hospital News, UVC light emitted at the right wavelength can kill the MRSA bacteria in 1.2 minutes at a 5 ft. distance.  Hospitals use UVC disinfection in many types of surface sterilization equipment including portable units and UV germicidal robots.

Industrial UV Air Purification Is Good for Business

flourescent-light-manufacturers
Commercial air quality is important as the air that we breathe day in and day out has a significant effect on our health. Maintaining a healthy workforce is critical for businesses to thrive, to meet production without unexpected illnesses and lost work time.  Businesses of all types including public commercial properties and manufacturing facilities should strive to provide clean indoor air free of particle and chemical pollutants.

The primary cause of the majority of colds and flues are germs, bacteria, viruses, mold, mildew and other microorganisms.  These disease causing germs enter the air from many different sources such as leftover food, mold, mildew and when someone coughs or sneezes. Regular hand washing and cleaning commercial spaces are important, healthy practices although it is impossible to provide a commercial environment completely free of germs. Antibacterial soap and germicidal cleaning products are a great way to keep your hands and surfaces clean although do nothing to ward off airborne illnesses.

Many traditional industrial air purification systems remove airborne pollutants although do not eliminate viruses, bacteria, mold, mildew and other disease causing germs. Even some of the best industrial air cleaners are powerless against these things unless they utilize UVC germicidal lamps.  Traditional air purification systems in commercial applications use a filtration method to remove particle pollutants, although these systems allow microorganisms to easily pass through.

UV Air Sanitizers Remove Germs Filtration Methods Do Not

The UV radiation emitted in UV air sanitizers is the only effective way to remove mold, mildew, viruses, bacteria and disease causing microbes. Industrial grade UV air purification systems are proven to be highly effective. UVC germicidal lamps can be installed in HVAC systems as an effective method to purify the air in large spaces.  UV HVAC systems improve air quality for a healthy workforce while meeting industrial air quality requirements.

UVC Lamps for Air Purification

UVC germicidal lamps used in air purification systems emit a specific wavelength at 254 nanometer (nm) to instantly alter the DNA of germs and harmful microorganisms. UV radiation penetrates the cells to render them unable to replicate thus eliminating any disease causing threat.  It is important to use high-quality UVC germicidal lamps to achieve maximum germicidal effectiveness and air quality.

The LightSources Group is a leading global supplier of high-quality UVC germicidal lamps used in air purification systems, as well as water and surface sterilization applications worldwide.  We offer a vast product line to meet any germicidal requirement and offer custom designed, high-tech UV germicidal solutions.

High Quality MPUV and MPHO Lamps for Disinfection

post 94

Medium pressure ultraviolet (MPUV) germicidal lamps and medium pressure high output (MPHO) lamps provide disinfection solutions to many surface disinfection, air purification and water sterilization applications.  MPUV lamps provide many benefits to high volume water treatment processes such as in waste water treatment plants  and ships’ ballast water treatment systems.

Advantages of MPUV Disinfection Lamps

MPUV germicidal lamps produce significantly more UVC energy over low pressure ultraviolet (LPUV) lamps.  This allows for increased flow rate even in compact spaces. MPUV germicidal lamps provide another advantage by emitting polychromatic wavelengths, which means emissions of multiple wavelengths. Polychromatic UVC germicidal lamps are used in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) which are proven to effectively reduce and remove micro-pollutants such as
insecticides, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals from wastewater.

UV Light Disinfection Proven for Ballast Water Treatment

lighting-technology

UV light harnesses the power of ultraviolet radiation and is proven to provide highly effective disinfection and sterilization of water, air and surfaces. UV germicidal lamps are used worldwide in air treatment systems and many water treatment applications. UV water treatment systems are used to treat drinking water in municipalities, aquifers, fish hatcheries, swimming pools and spas, industrial water treatment and ballast water treatment systems found in ships.

The Ballast Water Treatment Convention, BWTC, requires that an effective ballast water treatment system be utilized on board all vessels transporting freight through international waters. Contaminated ballast water is recognized as one of the greatest threats to the sustainability of the world’s oceans. When ships pick up ballast water in one port and release that water in a foreign port, invading microorganisms have been known to wreak havoc and destroy ecosystems and entire fishing industries.

Ballast Water Treatment Technologies

Various technologies used to treat ballast water include filtration, chlorination and UV treatment. Chlorination requires using chemicals which can also release harmful byproducts into the ocean.  UV ballast water treatment systems are effective without releasing harmful byproducts and are often used in conjunction with filtration methods.  UV germicidal lamps instantly eliminate harmful bacteria, viruses, protozoa and even microorganisms that chlorine will not kill.
UV ballast water treatment technology is approved by the US Coast Guard and is easy to maintain on ships, even smaller vessels with a compact footprint.

Ballast Water Treatment Systems with USCG Approval

post 110

When ships and cargo vessels take on ballast water in one port and release in another, natural ecosystems and fishing industries can be destroyed. Untreated ballast water contains marine organisms that are foreign to the ecosystems in which they are released and is known as one of the greatest threats to the sustainability of the world’s oceans. The Ballast Water Treatment Convention (BWTC) is enforced by the Marine Environmental Protection Committee, MEPC, a division of the International Maritime Organization, IMO.

The BWTC requires all ships traveling through international waters to maintain an approved ballast water treatment system.  The United States Coast Guard enforces the proper treatment of ballast water and requires any ships taking on or releasing ballast water to meet USCG approval.  Ballast water treatment technologies include ultraviolet (UV) lamp systems, filtration and chlorination.

UV Ballast Water Treatment Technology

UV germicidal lamps are used in ballast water treatment systems to emit a powerful UV radiation which is a known water sterilizer.  UV lamps designed to emit UV radiation at a specific wavelength of 254 nm are proven to instantly destroy harmful viruses, bacteria and microorganisms.  When water passes through a UV lamp water sterilization system, UV light instantly alters the DNA of these living organisms and renders them inactive and unable to replicate.

UV light is used in many water sterilization applications worldwide and is proven to eliminate harmful bacteria naked to the human eye as well as some bacteria that chlorine does not kill.  UVC germicidal lamps deliver powerful UV radiation without the use of harmful chemicals or byproducts. What is the Most Energy Efficient Light Bulb?

At the LightSources group, we recognize that it is important to produce our energy-efficient lamps in the most environmentally-friendly way.  To meet that goal, we continue to develop environmentally-friendly technologies as well as implement green business practices.   We also provide on-going training for employees regarding the latest environmental issues and proper practices within our industry.

While we strive to lessen our carbon footprint and incorporate sustainable methods into our day-to-day operations, we thought it is important to discuss lighting options for our own homes.  Any visit to a do-it-yourself big box store, indicates the selection of energy-efficient light bulbs intended for home use is getting bigger and more complicated.

The U.S. Department of Energy website offers insight into how to light your home with the same amount of light but less expensively.  Data shows 5% of the average U.S. household’s energy budget goes to lighting  and that one of the easiest way to reduce your energy bills are to use energy-efficient light bulbs.

Although no longer being manufactured, traditional incandescent bulbs used a lot of energy to produce light and 90% of the energy was given off as heat.  However when we look at today’s shelves and shelves of bulbs filled with an assortment of halogen incandescent, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and light emitting diodes (LEDs), it can be confusing on what to buy.

While halogen incandescent lamps meet the federal regulations, there are now better options available.  The Dept. of Energy states compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) are simply curly versions of the long tube fluorescent lights we are all familiar with.  Although they are more expensive than traditional incandescent bulbs, CFLs typically pay for themselves in less than nine months.  An ENERGY STAR rated CFL “uses about one-fourth the energy and lasts ten times longer than a comparable traditional incandescent bulb that puts out the same amount of light.”

Light emitting diodes (LEDs) represent the fastest developing light technologies. ENERGY STAR LEDs are rated as using only “20%–25% of the energy and last up to 25 times longer than the traditional incandescent bulbs they replace.”  They also use less energy and last 8 to 25 times longer than halogen incandescent bulbs.

LightSources and our affiliated companies represent the leading high-tech designers and manufacturers in the lamp industry today.  Our products are used world-wide in a multitude of applications and industries such as our UV air treatment systems that offer patent-protected, OEM-oriented solutions.  Regardless of whether you are a small or large company, or an entrepreneur with a new product idea; trust us with your specialty lighting needs.
