Many Advantages of UV Light Disinfection Robots

Robots have been used in many areas of the medical field for decades, such as the Da Vinci robot that helps with surgeries and robots that roam from patient room to patient room with tablets allowing for tele-visits with your doctor. Robots assist with many other roles in the medical field such as disinfection robots equipped with ultraviolet (UV) lamps used to help sterilize surfaces.

Disinfection robots are not a new idea, they have been around for a while although have gained increased attention amidst the coronavirus pandemic.  UV light disinfection is used in many industries to sterilize surfaces, air and water and is proven effective in the healthcare industry to help prevent the spread of infection.  Hospitals must be diligent in cleaning and sterilizing patient rooms as hospital acquired infections (HAIs) are a serious concern for patients and staff.

The most commonly transmitted HAIs are from viruses and bacteria resistant to antibiotics and are also referred to as superbugs. Some of the most common superbugs include methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), and Clostridium difficile (C.diff).  It is estimated by the CDC that one in every 31 hospital patients will contract an HAI on any given day.  This puts patients and staff at risk of contracting a serious illness that causes pain, suffering and even death.

UV Disinfection Robots Help to Prevent HAIs

A study by the National Institutes of Health, Application of Service Robots for Disinfection in Medical Institutions published in 2017 shows that ultraviolet light robots significantly reduced the burden of MRSA on patient room surfaces.  This was true for patients known to have had a MRSA infection.  UV light sterilization devices including UV light robots used in conjunction with manual cleaning and sterilization efforts are highly effective at reducing the amount of harmful pathogens on surfaces.

UV light robots provide effective disinfection properties and many additional benefits such as automation, robots can be programmed to shut down in the presence of people and to find their way back to their charging station.  Robots are an investment that pays off with increased sterilization and no labor expenses.  The types of UVC germicidal lamps used in UVC robots are crucial to achieve maximum sterilization effectiveness.

LightSources offers high-quality, high-performance UVC germicidal lamps used n a wide array of sterilization applications.  Our lighting engineers possess deep technical knowledge of UV radiation and offer custom designed sterilization lamps as well as prototype development.  Contact us with any questions on UVC germicidal lamps for UV light disinfection robots.

Reduce Psoriasis Symptoms with UV Lamps

People that suffer from psoriasis experience dry, itchy patches of skin in raised, hardened lesions ranging from mild to moderate symptoms.  Conventional treatments such as topical ointments provide relief to some patients with mild to moderate symptoms but are not as effective to people with severe symptoms.
Phototherapy with Ultraviolet (UV) light is proven highly effective at controlling psoriasis symptoms, providing relief to patients suffering with this bothersome skin condition. Phototherapy imitates the sun’s natural healing effects when narrow-band UVB lamps are used for treatment along with lamps combining both UVA and UVB wavelengths.
UV Lamp for Psoriasis Treatment
UV lamp therapy for psoriasis treatment must be administered from a doctor’s office or a medical setting with the correct type of UV phototherapy lamp. Two types of UVB exposure may be prescribed with either narrow band or broad band wavelengths.  The main difference between the two is that the narrow band UVB lamps provide a smaller range of UV exposure.
UVA wavelengths are also used to treat psoriasis although are typically used in combination with psoralen, a medication which increases the skin’s receptiveness to the UV wavelengths. This UV treatment with psoralen is called PUVA, which slows down the excessive growth of skins cells providing effective treatment.  Consistency is key to seeing results which may be visible in a few weeks to months.

UV Technology Provides Effective Ballast Water Treatment

New requirements under the Ballast Water Treatment Convention took place last September of 2017 with all ships required to have effective treatment systems on board.  When ships are transporting freight through international waters, they must use ballast water to balance their vessel by picking up water in one port when low on freight and discharging in another port when picking up freight.  This use of ballast water has been identified as one of the greatest threats to the world's oceans.

When ships pick up sea water they also pick up all the ocean life with it which includes microorganisms, viruses and bacteria.  The problem occurs when this water is released into a new, foreign environment which may not be prepared to control the new invading species.  Cases of invading mussels have practically shut down dams and ports when multiplying and attaching themselves to structures, invading jellyfish have all but destroyed fishing industries making ghost towns out of once thriving fishing ports.

Due to these very real threats which jeopardize the sustainability of the planet’s oceans, the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) which is a subsidiary of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) began enforcing new standards for ships’ treatment of ballast water which must meet U.S. Coast Guard approval.
UV Germicidal Lamps Provide Effective Ballast Water Treatment
Ultraviolet (UV) light technology is proven to be highly effective at sterilizing water, air and surfaces.  With just seconds of exposure to UV radiation at the optimum wavelength of 254 nanometer (nm), viruses and bacteria are instantly eliminated.  UV germicidal lamps provide effective ballast water treatment methods which are completely safe for human exposure.  UV ballast water treatment provides effective results with U.S. Coast Guard approved methods, are safer than chemical treatment methods as there is no release of chemicals back into the water as with chemical treatment systems.

Eczema is a common skin condition affecting over 30 million Americans with some form of this irritating skin ailment. Eczema presents in various forms which include contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, dyshidrotic eczema and stasis dermatitis.  While symptoms may differ for each individual, the most common symptoms of all types of eczema include:

                Dry, sensitive skin

                Red, inflamed skin

                Extreme itching

                Oozing or crusting

                Swelling

In all forms of eczema, itchiness is one of the most common symptoms which can cause people to scratch harder sometimes until they bleed making the condition much worse.  Children and babies can develop eczema which is usually noticeable on their cheeks and chin although you may see symptoms anywhere on the body. Children often outgrow this condition, although for some people it does last into adulthood.
The exact cause of eczema is not known, but one thing is certain; people that suffer from the skin condition release from the itchy, red skin and the emotional turmoil it can cause.

Make Sure Your Ballast Water Treatment System is USCG Approved

The Ballast Water Treatment Convention is what governs the responsibility of the shipping industry, specifically how ships traveling through international waters treat their ballast water. The Ballast Water Treatment Convention (BWTC) established new standards effective September 2017 to address this issue which is considered one of the greatest threats to our planet’s oceans. The BWTC is enforced by the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), a subsidiary of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
According to the most recent BWTC, all ships must be equipped with an effective ballast water treatment system that is approved by the United States Coast Guard (USCG).
The Threat of Ships’ Ballast Water
When ships sail through international waters they hold ocean water in their ballast for balance depending on the weight of their cargo.  When delivering cargo in a foreign port, they will take on ballast water to compensate for the loss of weight and provide balance when sailing to their next destination.  When picking up cargo in one port, they may release their ballast water to allow for the additional weight.
By releasing oceanic water into a foreign port, the ships’ ballast water also releases aquatic organisms which invade the foreign port, often with catastrophic consequences. Lifeforms such as mussels, clams, jellyfish, crabs, and many microorganisms including viruses and bacteria which are naked to the human eye invade foreign waters without the safeguard of their natural predators from their home environment. This allows the invading species to multiply, jeopardizing the health and wellness of fish and aquatic lifeforms and even threatens the health of human life inland.
Invading foreign mussels have nearly shut down dams and power plants when allowed to multiply uncontrollably, causing a great risk to the people living in these areas. Jellyfish have been known to destroy fishing industries when invading foreign ports and without their natural predators can be nearly impossible to eradicate.
There is no question that the terms of the new BWTC are established to protect the environment, the sustainability of our world’s oceans and the people that live near these ports that depend upon the fishing industry for their livelihood.

UV Treatment for Ships Ballast Water

UV treatment for ships ballast water is providing a solution to the new requirements of the Ballast Water Treatment Convention (BWTC).  New requirements are taking effect in September of 2017, enforced by the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC).  The MEPC is a division of the IMO, the International Maritime Organization which is a global effort of the United Nations.
Treatment of ballast water in ships is imperative to the survival of our oceans as we know them.  When ships take on ballast water for stability of the vessel, they often release it into foreign waters in another region, which can have devastating effects.  As has happened in several oceans around the world, when marine organisms consisting of bacteria, viruses, and some small sea creatures are released into a foreign environment they can invade and destroy the current eco-system.
Some devastating consequences of the invasion of foreign marine life have resulted in diminishing a once dominant fishing industry into a ghost town, and in some cases toxic red algae actually causing death of most marine life and some humans.
Methods of Treating Ballast Water
Of the three methods for treating ships ballast water, UV germicidal lamps are providing a safe, effective, and cost-efficient method.  Some systems may use filtration, but this is not always effective as some bacteria are so small filters are not reliable.  Some methods use chemicals, but this requires constant maintenance and can cause corrosion of equipment and require dichlorination.
UV treatment is becoming the popular choice for effectively eradicating harmful organisms.  UV light, with wavelength emittance of an effective 254 nm (nanometer) provides effective germ killing solutions with low maintenance.
LightSources Provides Solutions to Ship Manufacturers
LightSources has partnered with the largest suppliers of water treatment systems for the shipping industry, enhancing performance with cost reduction.  Our germ-killing lamps use the most effective amount of ultraviolet transmission, promoting the most absorption and completely eliminating microbial organisms.  Contact the experts at LightSources to learn more about UV applications for ballast water treatment systems.
