Phototherapy Treats Seasonal Depression

Seasonal depression often occurs during the fall and winter months for people who live in the Northern Hemisphere, when daylight hours begin to diminish. If you experience seasonal depression, also referred to as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), you should talk to your physician about therapies including light therapy. Light therapy is also called phototherapy and is successful in treating anywhere from 50% to 80% of patients when administered properly.

If you experience any of the following symptoms of seasonal depression, consult with your physician about light therapy for depression. Symptoms of seasonal depression include:
  • Social withdrawal
  • Craving foods which are high in carbohydrates
  • Loss of interest in normal activities
  • Excessive fatigue
  • Weight gain
Phototherapy is recognized as effective therapy SAD, making a considerable improvement in the mood of at least 50% of patients undergoing treatment. When light therapy is administered to an individual’s specific wake and sleep cycle, the percentage of successful treatment increases to as much as 80%. Light therapy usually consists of 30 minutes of exposure from a white fluorescent light each morning. Most patients see a remarkable improvement within as little as one week of treatment.
