Effective Ballast Water Treatment Methods

With the most recent regulations for the Ballast Water Treatment Convention taking effect last fall of 2017, all ships are required to have an approved ballast water treatment system on board their vessel. When ships use ballast water while traveling through international waters, they take on ocean water in one port and release it in another. This transfer of ballast water is viewed as one of the largest threats to our planet’s oceans.

When ships release water from one port into a foreign port, aquamarine microorganisms including dangerous bacteria, viruses and foreign life forms often invade the new port with catastrophic results. Invading species are free to take hold in new waters without their natural predators and will often replicate uncontrollably shutting down fishing ports and devastating entire towns. Once thriving fishing town are turned into ghost towns leaving the waters contaminated and the human population without a livelihood.

The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) is a subsidiary of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and enforces the new Ballast Water Treatment Convention (BWTC) which sets the standards for how ships treat their ballast water. All ballast water treatment systems must have an approved treatment system on board that meets U.S. Coast Guard approval.

UVC Germicidal Lamps for U.S. Coast Guard Approved Treatment Systems

UVC germicidal lamps provide powerful water sterilization which meets U.S. Coast Guard Approval for the new Ballast Water Treatment Convention. Ultraviolet, specifically UVC, radiation is proven to quickly and effectively eradicate all viruses and bacteria in water sterilization applications. UVC germicidal lamps are used worldwide to disinfect water, surfaces and air in sterilization systems. UVC radiation emitted at 254 nm is most effective at eradicating all harmful contaminants immediately upon exposure, for fast sterilization in mere seconds.

LightSources is a leading global supplier of high performance UVC germicidal lamps which meet all sterilization requirements with long lasting effectiveness. We offer a wide selection of standard lamps with custom designed solutions available in any shape, size or UVC output.
